Abstract
A survey was conducted in Amaro Special Wereda from June 2003 to July 2004 to assess the population of tsetse flies and trypanosome disease prevalence as well as their effects in cattle production and performance. The result indicated that the intervention and control program brought about an effect compared to the pre-control survey result. Only one species of tsetse fly, Glossina Pallidipes , was caught and the number of flies per trap per day declined from 2.46 in the pre-control period to 0.1 after the intervention. Out of 250 cattle randomly sampled from three-intervention sites, sample size ranging 50–100 animals, the overall disease prevalence rates revealed a significant difference after intervention (4%) than the pre-control survey result (42.81%). The mean packed cell volume of the sampled animals was so different (27.92%) than the pre-control (23.17%). The program brought noticeable changes in the area. Field observation and community response showed that there was change in the score of livestock physical body condition, production and productivity, highly reduced morbidity and mortality rate, and reduced rate of treatments.
