THE CONTRIBUTION OF PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL TECHNIQUES TO INTEGRATED RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN ETHIOPIA

SEID ALI, 2000

ABSTRACT

This dissertation examines whether participatory approaches contribute to the success of integrated rural development programmes in NGO activities in Ethiopia.
It discusses the various participatory approaches and techniques used by three NGOs in the implementation of integrated rural development programmes in Ethiopia.
The study then reviews the contribution of these techniques in their programmes in both narrow and wider contexts, by contrasting the three NGOs' objectives.  It verifies that participatory approaches have been implemented by these NGOs at different levels and contributed to the achievements of the immediate objectives of the NGOs.
This dissertation has four main objectives: first, to assess the degree of implementation of participatory techniques in their extension programmes; second, to measure the achievements of different activities due to the techniques used; third, to evaluate the methodology and to find reasons for success or failure of participatory approaches in development work.  Finally, the study includes some recommendations on: appropriate techniques that could be used in the future, the priority activities, and the desired goals of each activity.
