Abstract
Gender analysis survey was conducted in Enebse Sar Midir Wereda using Harvard gender analysis framework in 2003. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for discussion with 88 (48 female) purposively selected respondents from three kebeles. Primary and secondary data were also collected from wereda line department workers. The result showed that the socio-economic system, the rigidity of socially ascribed gender roles, women's limited access to and controlling power over resources, insufficient basic social services, lack of own valuable resources and assets, low decision-making power at household and community level lead to poverty and food insecurity. Harmful traditional practices were found to be deeply rooted in the community without realization of their effects to health and psychosocial well being. Mothers and children were reported to be the most affected groups. Gender intervention should be strengthened to remove socio-cultural barriers that hinder women decision-making. The strategic needs of the community and women and the disadvantaged in particular, should be identified and addressed.
