Abstract

A preliminary assessment on the impression of farmers towards promoting Triticale was carried out In the Bereh Aleltu Woreda, North Shewa . Observation of farm plots, semi-structured interview to researcher farmers, project participants of Agri Service Ethiopia ( ASE ), the Government and extensionists of the government and ASE was employed to verify their perception and impression regarding the acceptance of the crop at local condition. The study revealed that Triticale adapts well to the local conditions including soil types and various fertility levels, waterlogged plots, frost and pests. Compared with wheat as food crop, it does not fit into part of cultural foods such as eshet, enkuto and klollo because of susceptibility to fire and difficulty of removing the rough seed coat. Food preparation other than Atmit, kinchie and Tella is hardly possible. Marketability of the grain so far is having trouble due to inadequate familiarization work on the crop and food preparation as well as poor threshability of the crop. Having realized about threshability, food preparation and marketability constraints, over 70% of the interviewees yet agree upon the promotion of the crop as its hardy nature enables it to adapt to the local environment. It is therefore suggested to familiarize the crop on food preparation, improving its threshability and publicize the crop in local market and elsewhere.
